Online portal dupes man, owner arrested

A Kurla-based businessman was duped to the tune of '27,500 by an online shopping portal. The Kurla police has recently arrested the accused owner of the online portal firm from Orissa. The police probe revealed that the accused through online advertisements on the Internet, offered 25 per cent discount on the purchase of any cellphone. The complainant made an online payment for a cellphone using his credit card, but never got it delivered. The arrested accused has been identified as Shankarrao Someshwar Ray Vysyaraju (26). He was picked up from Orissa by the police on the complaint of one Habibulla Ishtiyaq Ahmed Chaudhary, a Kurla (west) resident, who deals in metals. Mr Chaudhary told The Asian Age, “I wanted to buy a smartphone. To get the best deal, I looked for phones on the Internet using a known search engine and came across an advertisement posted by Vysyya.in, which offered a 25 per cent discount on any cellphones. I decided to buy a Samsung Galaxy Note II through the online portal and placed an order on December 29, 2012.” “On April 4, we registered an offense against Shankarrao Vysyaraju under Sections 420 (cheating) and Section 66 (d) of the Information Technology Act on the complaint of Mr Chaudhary and after conducting a probe, we arrested Vysyaraju on October 4 from the Shastrinagar area of Brahmpur district of Orissa,” said PI Sonawane of Kurla police station. “The accused Vysyaraju was active on a known social networking site, with the help of which we traced him in Orissa. A cellphone and cash worth '27,650 were recovered from him,” said API P.S. Koyande.
