A 30-year-old police sub inspector (PSI) attempted suicide by firing a round from his service pistol in a bid to resist arrest in an alleged bribery case from the officials of the Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday in Nagpur district.
According to the Nagpur ACB unit, the incident occurred at the residence of the accused PSI Manish Gawande in police quarters in Panchpavali. He is posted at Panchpavali police station. Around 3 pm, five officials and men from ACB went to Gawande’s house. He was in his bedroom.
Seeing them come in, Gawande pulled out his pistol and tried to shoot himself in the head.
The five members of the team sprang on him and managed to overpower him but he fired the gun and the bullet hit the ceiling fan. “Gawande has been arrested under section 309 of the IPC for attempting suicide and a magistrate’s court has sent him to police custody for a day,” said inspector Subhangi Deshmukh, who was part of the team.
The ACB had gone there to arrest him in a bribery case in which he allegedly connived with his colleagues assistant sub-inspector Ulhas Pawar (51) and police constable Pravin Jambhulkar (32) from the same police station. They had demanded a weekly bribe of Rs 4,000 from a hotelier for allowing him to run an illegal business.
