The Navghar police has arrested an inspector attached with the rationing department, Bhayander (east) for allegedly demanding sex from a woman applicant as bribe to prepare and deliver a fresh ration card.

The 45-year-old accused, Ajit Bhaguram Kasore, is a resident of Charkop, in Kandivli. He has been arrested for demanding sexual favours from a 27-year-old woman applicant over the phone. Her husband had applied for a new ration card and was told to collect the card from Kasore on June 2. But as her husband was away at work, she went to Kasore’s office, where Kasore “asked her some uncomfortable questions”. According to police inspector Shrikant Padule of the Navghar police station, the accused then asked for her mobile number for “official” purposes, as he would need to visit her residence for verification so that the card could be given to her.

Over the next few days, Kasore would call her at odd hours and make obscene remarks, to which the complainant did not react, said the police. But on June 15, she received a call from an unknown number where the caller claimed to be a friend of the complainant’s husband and said he wanted to have sex with her. She reported the incident to her husband and they approached the police.

“The number belonged to Kasore. We arrested him under Section 354 of the IPC,” said PI Padule.
