An inquiry report on the conduct of the Pen police while investigating the case of an unidentified charred body in a suitcase — which turned out to be that of Sheena Bora — back in 2012 has been submitted to the home department. Former director general of police Sanjeev Dayal had conducted the inquiry and submitted it to the home department after which last month it was sent back to his successor Praveen Dixit. Mr Dixit has now submitted it again to the home department.
It is learnt that Mr Dixit has made no changes in the report submitted by Mr Dayal. Mr Dixit has further reiterated the action recommended by Mr Dayal. When the above information was taken to Mr Dayal, he expressed unhappiness over the home department’s statement to a newspaper.
Mr Dayal said, “It was a three-page report which was submitted on September 29. Why are they (home department) saying it’s a one page report ” Earlier The Asian Age had reported how sources privy to the CBI investigations were planning to book the Pen official/s for aiding the murder of Sheena Bora.
Mr Dayal has indicted former SP of Raigad district R.D. Shinde in the report for dereliction of duty. Mr. Shinde is presently additional commissioner of police, central region, Mumbai police. As proof, Mr Dayal has cited the phone calls made to Mr Shinde by an officer who was investigating the case.
The officer in his statement in an inquiry conducted against him by present Raigad SP Suvez Haque has claimed that he had made a phone call to Mr Shinde informing him about the incident. The officer further claimed he was asked not to register an FIR, which was made out prima facie as a charred body was found inside a burnt suitcase. Based on several other findings, Mr Dayal had asked to take serious note of the issue and warranted action against Mr Shinde.
Apart from this, the Pen police also never sent the samples from Sheena’s body to the Forensic Lab at Kalina. It also did not collect the samples sent to JJ Hospital despite reminders by the JJ authorities. The CBI, which took over the probe from the Mumbai police, has investigated into this aspect of the case.
