Somani Marg to be widened from 50 to 80 feet
Mumbaikars may soon be rid of the long traffic queues on Hazarimal Somani Marg near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).
Mumbaikars may soon be rid of the long traffic queues on Hazarimal Somani Marg near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). With an aim to alleviate the travel woes, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to widen the Somani Marg from 50 feet to 80 feet.
The Hazarimal Somani Marg, which runs along the Azad Maidan to Chaphekar Chowk in Fort, is the only nearest route available for vehicles coming from Churchgate-Nariman Point to CST. Due to this, it is jammed with vehicular movement, especially during the evenings, when vehicles have to clear nearly two to three signals to reach CST. This also causes huge inconvenience to pedestrians, who have to make way through the congested traffic.
However, some of the constructions will have to make way for the widening of the Somani Marg. According to civic officials, there are some constructions like Zunka-Bhakar Kendra near CST, the entrance of Bombay Gymkhana, a biscuit stall, Tribunal office and government offices, which will have to be removed for the widening. Some part of Azad Maidan will also have to be acquired for the project.
“The Somani Marg, which is presently of 50 feet, will be extended to 80 feet. The BMC has carried out a total station survey, which will be submitted to the top officials for the approval. These are not permanent constructions and notices will be issued to them soon,” said Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner of A ward.
Local Shiv Sena corporator Ganesh Sanap, who has been demanding the move, said that the move will benefit 15 lakh commuters.
