Bhaidooj celebrations on Tuesday took a tragic turn after two brothers and their cousins — all minors — drowned in the Kalu River of Titwala at around 4pm. All three victims, aged between nine and 16 years, were visiting a relative’s place along with their parents and had later decided to go for a swim in the river when the accident occurred.

Four other siblings who accompanied the three victims at the river sought help from a few locals at the spot who tried to rescue the victims but without success. The deceased have been identified as Sainath Sanjay Bhoir (16), Jiwan Bhior (13), and Sainath Santosh Bhoir (9). They were brothers and had come to the place to celebrate Diwali and Bhaidooj together. A police source said that Sainath Santosh Bhoir was the cousin brother of the other two children. A resident of Titwala east, he had gone to his cousin brothers’ house to celebrate Bhaidooj along with his parents and sisters.

A Titwala police officer told The Asian Age, “After having dinner when the elders decided to chat, the children decided to go to the river which is at a 10 minute distance from the house to play on its banks. Sainath Sanjay Bhoir urged everyone to take a swim in the river. There were five other siblings. The two Sainaths and Jiwan went deep inside the river and could not swim back when the flow increased. At that point, they started drowning. Other siblings tried to call passers-by but no one could save them. We removed the body from the river at 8 pm and sent for post-mortem.”
