Two farmers end life in Nashik district

Two drought-affected farmers committed suicide in the villages of Vitave and Mendhi in Chandwad and Sinnar tehsils in Nashik district.

Two drought-affected farmers committed suicide in the villages of Vitave and Mendhi in Chandwad and Sinnar tehsils in Nashik district. The Chandwad police said Chhabu Revji Kolhe (60) of Vitave committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in his field. The body was discovered by his son, who raised an alarm and brought it down on Tuesday.

The exact reason for the suicide could not be verified. The body was given to the family for cremation after an autopsy was carried out.

In another case, Vithal Kondaji Gite (36) hung himself in his house on Somthan-Mendhi road on Tuesday. Family members had noticed him and he was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On Monday, farmer Jibhau Baliram Bachhav (45) of Kavlane committed suicide by jumping into a dry well. He had taken loans amounting to Rs 3,00,000 from various cooperative credit societies, relatives and friends. As the crops failed, he was worried for a month and decided to end his life. He has a 4.5-acre rain-fed farm in Kavlane village.

The farm on his mother’s name has a loan of Rs 900,000, according to the ownership register.

Two debt-ridden farmers from adjoining Vinchure village in Baglan tehsil committed suicide on April 20 while one farmer from adjoining Nandgaon tehsil committed suicide on March 28.
