Singer, spoken word performer, designer, activist, actor —Monica Dogra has worn many a hat in her career so far. And fans have a new reason to celebrate as Monica launched her solo debut album, Spit, on January 29. The nine-track album features a mix of genres, and the sound varies from uplifting beats to electronic vibes. Monica chatted with us about matters melodious.

The song on my iPod these days: Say What You Like (single from Spit)

If I had to put together a ‘soundtrack’ for my life, the five songs on it would be: Joyful Girl by Ani DiFranco; Fiona Apple — The First Taste (Fiona Apple is describing how she just wants for someone to give her a shot...I live my life like this, in faith that if I just go for it, everything will happen); Florence and the Machine — Dog Days Are Over (Sometimes I feel like I carry my wounds from my past, rather than realising that life is good now and it’s actually wonderful how layered and colourful the trajectory of my life has been. I’m grateful for the lows, makes the highs worthwhile), Bjork — Army of Me (I definitely feel like I’m a fighter. I’ve worked for every little bit that I have, and I think that’s made me a tough one to reckon with); Protect Ya Neck by the Wu-Tang Clan (I grew up in Baltimore and it’s really easy for me to slip into my inner hip hop head).

What I listen to when: I’m happy and upbeat: The Weekend’s I Can’t Feel My Face I’m really low: Frou Frou — The Dumbing Down of Love I’m working out: Missy Elliott’s This Is For My People

Music I loved growing up that I’m now embarrassed by: I am currently a little embarrassed that I love Justin Beiber’s new album! But it’s just so good.

If I could have one band in the world/a musician perform a private concert for me, it would have to be: Radiohead

And the one live act I would love to see at least once in my lifetime: I wish I had seen Michael Jackson before he died.
