A first year student from Pachaiyappa’s college who was crushed against a wall by the MTC bus he was travelling died on Thursday evening. The victim, E. Mathiyazhgan, 18, a resident of Narawari Kuppam in Red Hills, was pinned to the Puzhal police station wall by the bus.
The student was reported to be among a group who picked up a quarrel with the crew of the bus 57 F (plying between Vallalar Nagar and Karanodai). “When the bus driver was steering his vehicle towards the station to complain about the students, they started getting off and running away. But Mathiyazhagan got sandwiched between the bus and station wall. He was rushed to a private hospital where he died later,” the police said.
The students were reportedly singing in the bus due to which an argument broke out between them and the bus crew. “Unable to control the students, the bus driver decided to take the vehicle to the station.
As the bus was nearing the station, students became aware of the intention of the driver and they started jumping off the bus,” the police said. A few other students ran away leaving their bags behind. A search by the police resulted in recovery of a one and half foot long knife from one of the bags. The post mortem on Mathiyazhagan will be conducted on Friday.
While the college has declared a holiday on Friday, police have decided to deploy personnel in front of the college and Stanley medical college hospital where the post mortem is scheduled besides stationing more policemen near the residence of the victim to make sure no untoward incident takes place.
