For an industry with a success ratio of barely 15-18 per cent, 2012 has proved to be god-sent. Not only did Bollywood outdo itself in the year drawing to a close, but super-hit films made such humongous profits that people with even the slightest knowledge of films wanted to turn producer. Nine of the 160-odd films (excluding dubbed films from Hollywood or South India) released in 2012 entered the '100 crore club, which means, each collected over '100 crore net of entertainment tax, in Indian theatres alone. Interestingly, all kinds of films hit bull’s eye this year. Alongside a spy thriller like Ek Tha Tiger, there was an out-and-out action fare like Agneepath which became the first super-hit of 2012. If action comedies like Dabangg 2 and Rowdy Rathore scored, so did comedies like Housefull 2 and Bol Bachchan. Content-rich films like Kahaani won audience appreciation and so did films with novel subjects like Vicky Donor and Oh My God! A taut suspense drama like Talaash worked as much as horror dramas like Raaz 3 and 1920: Evil Returns. We may talk of the audience’s shrinking attention span, but the very lengthy Jab Tak Hai Jaan also did great business and became the year’s highest grosser in the overseas circuit.
