Dikshit: Police must ensure citizens’ safety

Chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday said the Delhi police must ensure that the people in the city feel safer. When asked about her remarks over the action taken on senior police officials for their alleged irresponsible behaviour in the gangrape case of paramedic student, she, however, maintained that she is nobody to comment on that. “I am nobody to be satisfied or dissatisfied (with the action taken against senior police officials). My only concern is that Delhi becomes a safe place for everyone. Delhi is a very big city and for securing the citizen, there is a need of improvement in the training of police officials and empowering instrumentation for quick action,” she said. When asked about why the government is organising a women dignity march, she said it is to unite the society against such heinous crime. “The police must become sensitive and responsive while dealing with such cases. A good transport system is also needed,” she told this newspaper. The chief minister added that the five special fast-track courts to deal with the cases of rape and assault on women will be set up by January 3. She also said that city government’s the “women in distress” helpline number 181 will be functional from her office by Monday. However, she refused to comment on the remarks of joint commissioner (traffic) Satyendra Garg who claimed that the bus, in which the gang-rape incident occurred, was impounded six times and it had not any license provided by the city government.
