Car stereo thief held for injuring constable

The Pant Nagar police on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old car stereo thief for allegedly ramming into a police constable and fracturing his leg in an incident that took place earlier this month. The accused, who was arrested from Karnataka, has around 40 theft cases registered against him around the city. His brother, who was his accomplice, is still absconding. On February 4, arrested accused Ganesh Manik Pawar (30) rammed his motorbike into constable Yashwant Manpat Kadam during a routine late night nakabandi on MG Road near Ghatkopar. The accused was accompanied by his brother Maruti (28). After colliding with Mr Kadam, the accused rode ahead and abandoned their bike before fleeing the spot. Constable Kadam fractured his left leg and was immediately admitted to Wockhardt Hospital in Mulund, where he is recuperating. The police found two stolen car stereos and initiated investigations. Interestingly, Ganesh had been booked for injuring another cop with the Khar police in a similar incident last year. Inquiries revealed that the bike had eight past owners.

In a hit-and-run accident, a 20-year-old girl’s wrist and three inches of her left hand was cut off after it got stuck inside the spokes of a Pulsar bike in Borivali (east) on Wednesday afternoon. The youngster riding the bike in the wrong lane sped away from the spot and attempts are being made to trace him. The Kasturba Marg police said the incident took place at around 12 pm in front of the Magathane bus depot in Borivali (east). The victim, Shradha Tari (20), a resident of nearby Jai Maharashtra Nagar was returning home from college. According to senior police inspector, Bharat Worlikar of Kasturba Marg police station, the unknown accused was riding his black Pulsar bike in the wrong lane. “The accused was trying to change the lane and saw a rickshaw in front of him. He dodged it and knocked the girl. Her hand got stuck in the wheel and was cut off,” said Mr Worlikar. Ms Tari was rushed to Bhagwati Hospital and was shifted to Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central by her parents. An eyewitness, Ankit Waghela (28) who saw the biker flee the spot and tried to chase him on another bike said, “The girl’s hand got stuck in the back wheel and he must have pressed the accelerator. He fell down from his bike in the process but left his helmet behind and sped away. I tried to chase him, but he got away.”
