Cook falls in last over, England 1 day to survive vs India

Vishakhapatnam: England captain Alastair Cook was finally dismissed in the last over of the fourth day on Sunday after resisting for 188 balls, leaving India needing eight more wickets to win the second Test.

England were 87-2 in their second innings at stumps after almost 60 overs as they chase an improbable target of 405 – another 318 runs – for victory with one day left.

Cook was out leg before wicket to Ravindra Jadeja for 54, while Haseeb Hameed was dismissed for 25.

Cook's departure ended play for the day, with Joe Root undefeated on 5.

Earlier, India were bowled out for 204 after resuming on 98-3.

Stuart Broad (4-33) and Adil Rashid (4-82) shared eight wickets for England.

Jayant Yadav (27 not out) and Mohammed Shami (19) put on 42 runs for the last wicket before Shami was stumped by Jonny Bairstow off Moeen Ali.

India scored 455 in their first innings, and England replied with 255 with the hosts deciding not to enforce the follow-on.

The first Test of the five-match series was drawn, and England will be hoping for a similar – if unlikely – outcome in Vizag.

After tea on Sunday, Cook and Hameed continued to stonewall. The pair batted for 50.2 overs and put on a slow but useful 75 runs for the opening wicket.

The 50-mark came up for England in the 38th over. Cook was then the subject of two DRS appeals in the space of six balls.

First, in the 46th over, Jadeja (1-25) had an lbw appeal turned down. In the very next over, Ravichandran Ashwin (1-28) had a similar experience, as India lost both their appeals quickly.

Ashwin dismissed Hameed lbw in the 51st over to end the long opening stand. Hameed faced 144 deliveries for his 25 runs and hit three fours.

Cook reached his 53rd Test half-century off 172 balls, including four fours. Given the circumstances, it was unsurprisingly his slowest 50.

Cook called for DRS after being trapped lbw, but the decision wasn't overturned.
