FIFA U-17 World Cup: USA, Ghana land in Delhi for Cup

New Delhi: Teams of the United States and Ghana have arrived here for the Fifa U-17 World Cup, that begins on October 6.

The US team landed at the Indira Gandhi International airport at around 10pm on Sunday while the Ghana side arrived at 3 pm on Monday.

The 21-member US team came from Dubai where they had a seven-day preparatory camp. Ghana, on the other hand, reached here from Abu Dhabi where they had trained.

Both USA and Ghana are in Group A along with hosts India and Colombia.

USA open their campaign against India on October 6, followed by matches against Ghana on October 9 and Colombia on October 12. The first two matches will be played at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, while the final group game will be played at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

Ghana open their campaign against Colombia on October 6, followed by matches against USA (October 9) and India (October 12). They will play all their group matches at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

Prominent players in the team include Josh Sargent and Tim Weah. Sargent will sign with Bundesliga club Werder Bremen next February when he turns 18.

German skipper joins team
In Margao, Germany skipper Jann-Fiete Arp joined his team and took part in the second practice session under the watchful eyes of coach Christian Wuck at the Nagao ground, Verna.

Arp did not travel with the other members of the team, who arrived on Sunday, as he was making his Bundesliga debut for Hamburg against Werder Bremen. The match ended in a goalless draw.

Asian champs Iraq arrive
Kolkata on the day saw Asian champions Iraq arriving for the World Cup, back in the tournament after missing the previous edition.

A 21-member team coached by Qahtan Jathir and six support staff landed here at 2.15am by a Qatar Airways flight before being escorted to the team hotel. Iraq face Mexico in their Group F opener at Salt Lake on October 8. Others in the group are Chile and England.
