Showing stronger nerves and better accuracy Air India Colony youngsters came good, defeating Junior Kalina Rangers 5-2 via the penalty shootout tie-breaker in the Boy’s Under-16 finals of the 17th Kalina Football League at the Our Lady of Egypt Church grounds, Kalina.
The scores were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation period with Carl Miranda on target for Air India and Ivan Fernandes scoring for defending champions Junior Rangers.
In the ensuing penalty shoot-out contest, Air India successfully converted from their first four attempts through Carl Miranda, Eshwar Gaikwad, Divesh Rajput and Girish Rane to emerge champions. Junior Rangers failed miserably in the tie-breaker and could only convert one through Ivan Fernandes.
Meanwhile, in the veteran men’s Inter-Parish final, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Parish, Chembur managed to overcome Our Lady of Orlem Parish, Malad through a late second half goal. Dead-ball specialist Prosenjit Barua scored with a direct curling shot from a free-kick taken from just outside the penalty area in the final minutes of the match to help the Chembur team clinch the title.
