Bengaluru: As Aizawl FC get set to face Mohun Bagan in the penultimate match of the domestic season, it’s make or break time for the surprise package of the season.
A win would see the Mizoram side reinstated to the top division following relegation last season only to make up the numbers, take a giant stride towards what could possibly be one of the biggest underdog success story in the country’s history.
As the city buzzes with excitement, Aizawl defender Lalruatthara and his team mates have eyes only on the match.
“We need to win against Mohun Bagan and that’s the only thing that’s on our mind for now. Winning the league would be huge. Not only for us, but for the state of Mizoram but the job is not done yet,” said the full back. “I think, the whole of Mizoram has come down to Aizawl. The stadium is sold out. In the past few days, whenever we have stepped out there’s just one thing people talk about, it’s this game,” he added.
Despite the steadfast self belief, the 22-year-old has no illusions about the task at hand. A defeat against the Kolkata giants could all but end their title challenge.
“We all know that Bagan are a very strong team. They are relentless. We need to be on the top of the game throughout the 90 minutes or else we have no chance,” he remarked adding that the presence of Bagan winger Sony Norde, who missed their previous league clash, will only make the task harder.
Citing the previous season as a transitional one, Lalruatthara credits the hard work and team atmosphere for their unprecedented run under coach Khalid Jamil.
“Last year, it was the first time that we were playing the I-League and we didn’t perform to the best of our abilities. So we wanted to ensure that we did everything right. Khalid (Jamil) has been a really good coach,” revealed the defender.
“Primarily it’s our hard work and the team work. We have slogged it off over the season and the results have come our way.”
