Veterans to spearhead boxing charge at CWG

New Delhi: India on Tuesday named a 12-strong boxing squad for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games with seasoned fighters M.C. Mary Kom and Manoj Kumar leading the charge.

Naman Tanwar and Gaurav Solanki made the cut after they booked their berths by winning the category trials, held at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Sunday.

In the women’s 51 kg weight category, Pinki Rani will look to repeat her India Open displays alongside Laisharam Devi (60kg), Lovlina Boroghain (69kg) and Mary Kom (48kg), all of whom have been in dominant form.

In the men’s 60 kg category, Manish Kaushik was picked ahead of Shiva Thapa, while Vikas Krishan and Manoj are expected to lead the charge. After a gritty show at the Strandja Memorial, Amit Phangal, will also look to go the distance. Also in the squad is Hussam Mohammed (56 kg).
