New Delhi: Ankur Mittal equalled the world record to win the gold medal at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in the double trap event in Acapulco, Mexico, late on Wednesday, pipping Australia’s James Willet in the final.
Mittal scored 75 points out of a possible 80, two more than Willet, in a six-man final round to win India’s first medal in the competition.
Mittal lost out to Willet in the gold medal race at the recent International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup in New Delhi, settling for silver and exacted sweet revenge at the next possible opportunity.
Mittal shot accurately throughout the day, finishing second in qualification with a score of 138 out of a possible 150.
He then got the better of China’s Ying Qi 6-5 in a shoot-off to decide the second and third spots after both had finished their qualifying rounds on the same score.
In the final round, Mittal missed the target only five times, only twice in his last 40 attempts to equal the world record and finish on top. Willet missed seven targets. China’s Ying, who won bronze with a score of 52, was eliminated after the 60th attempt.
