Neeraj Rawal pilots Tororosso to Derby riches

Bengaluru: Irfan Ghatala-trained Tororosso was given a splendid ride by Neeraj Rawal to decimate the opposition en route to a huge victory in the B.N. Gudiyappa Bangalore Derby, the plum event of the season, here on Thursday.

Kudos to Irfan who had produced the son of Paula Girl (by Red Giant) in picture perfect shape to win this mega event as a maiden. It was a back-to-back Derby success for Irfan, having led in Salazaar in the South India Derby a couple of weeks ago. “We thought of Tororosso highly and he has proved us right. He has matured a lot since his last run and the full credit goes to Silva Storai, who had prepared the horse meticulously in the workouts, and our team. It would not have been possible without them,” said the elated trainer.

“I knew only Battalion and Captain Morgan are my targets, so I had settled my mount behind them without bothering about the pace of the race or other runners. Once I alerted him to the task entering the home stretch he responded brilliantly,” said jockey Rawal. Amber Crown set a decent pace when the ten-horse field settled passing the winning post first time in the 2400 metres race, followed by Captain Morgan, Battalion, Sporting Pleasure, Admiral One, Bold March, Fabulous, Magistero, Tororosso and Proserpine last.

Passing the halfway mark, Battalion swiftly took over the running chased by Captain Morgan, Sporting Pleasure, Admiral One, Tororosso, Fabulous, Magistero, Proserpine and Amber Crown a bad last. Entering the home stretch, Battalion and Captain Morgan brought the field in view fighting for the lead with Tororosso quickly moving into third while the rest remained mute spectators.

The winner was sighted long way from home when Neeraj brought Tororosso with a smooth run approaching the final furlong mark to go clear, leaving Battalion to fight off Captain Morgan for the runner up while Fabulous completed the frame.
