Netflix won't support these devices from December
The company has informed potentially impacted users of the change via an email.
Streaming service Netflix is going to discontinue support for multiple older Smart Televisions and streaming sticks by December this year, it has revealed. The company has informed potentially impacted users of the change via an email. However, you would receive a screen notification if you are one of the impacted customers.
According to reports, these include older Samsung Smart TVs from 2011 or earlier, Vizio Smart TVs which are more than four years old and also first-generation Roku players. You can check if your Roku device is going to be fine or you’ve missed an email by seeing whether or not it displays an 'autoplay next' indicator on the screen. However, it has been reported that the first two generations of Roku players will be affected by the discontinuation.
Coming back to the devices, for Samsung and their TVs all products released after 2011 do not face any dangers of facing discontinuation. Meanwhile, there are no specifications on which Vizio TV sets have been affected, yet. The discontinuation will take effect from the 1st of December, said the email.
In a quote to the BBC, Jim Martin, editor of tech reviews website Tech Advisor said, "It's partly the price of being an early adopter...Technology moves quite quickly and nothing lasts forever." We agree. Many of these players contain older versions of Netflix’s application or do not have the technical capabilities of hosting the newer updates.
Cautious and careful users can further check Netflix’s website to double-check whether their current product is compatible, through the full list of Netflix compatible devices.
