Dragon Quest Heroes II is an action-rpg developed by Omega Force, a division of Koei Tecmo that is famous for Dynasty Warriors. In the beginning players must choose between two cousins, Lazarel or Teresa, but can later control any character they like from a large group. The cousins’ reunion is cut short when the town of Harba is suddenly invaded, signalling the end of peace in the Seven Relams that had lasted for over a thousand years.

Lazarel uses dual swords while Teresa fights with a sword and a shield. During combat, you can freely switch between up to four characters and even play co-op online. Combat largely consists of combining light and heavy attacks, along with dodging and utilising MP to cast spells or use abilities. Each party member has unique abilities that are accompanied with well-made special effects and animations. Just like all Omega Force games, combat is very responsive and it feels good to play. You cannot spam attack either as tougher enemies will quickly deplete your HP if you’re not constantly avoiding attacks. As players engage in combat, a tension metre gets filled. Upon being full, you can initiate High Tension mode which negates all damage for a short duration and allows you to use spells or abilities without costing MP. High Tension mode ends with a devastating attack which damages all enemies in the area.

Monsters often drop medals that let you summon them during combat. While these also range from attack to support monsters, the best medals let you transform into a giant beast and lay waste to all foes. There is a simple progression system which lets you earn new abilities or passive bonuses. On your travels, you will visit a variety of towns, dungeons and fields. Unfortunately, the design of the world is incredibly bland and your journey will largely consist of fighting countless monsters in boring fields. The characters on the other hand are quirky and charming.Dragon Quest Heroes 2 is solid action-rpg that tries to mix multiple genres but doesn’t handle their individual elements all that well. For the fans of action games it’s enjoyable, yet ultimately forgettable.
