Vivo to reportedly get Synaptics In-Display Fingerprint Sensor
According to Forbes, analyst Patrick Moorhead detailed his experience with a pre-production Vivo phone with the technology.
Earlier this week, Synaptics announced that it has entered mass production with its first optical in-display fingerprint sensors with one of the ‘top-five’ smartphone vendors. Now a report suggests that Vivo is working with Synaptics to develop the technology. Prior to this Vivo has partnered with Qualcomm to showcase an under-display fingerprint sensor.
According to Forbes, analyst Patrick Moorhead detailed his experience with a pre-production Vivo phone equipped with a Synaptic’s in-display fingerprint sensor dubbed as Clear ID technology.
According to the same report, Moorhead describes the sensor as ‘fast and simple.’ Synaptics claims that its in-house technology is highly secured and is as fast as 3D facial recognition such as Apple's Face ID.
The report suggested that enabling in-display fingerprint sensors on smartphones so far has been a manufacturability issue. But Synaptics says that it is expecting 70 million units of in-display sensors to be out on the market in 2018, as per analyst. The advantage of opting for in-display sensors would let manufacturers bring more full-screen smartphones in the future.
Additionally, manufacturers such as Apple have opted fingerprint sensor, while OnePlus and Samsung have moved it to the back of the smartphone.
