Muting is a subtle way of cleaning your timeline — the person you mute will never know, though you keep wondering how many people have muted you. The Twitter block is powerful tool.

Here’s what happens when you block someone:

  • They cannot see your tweets. Also you cannot see theirs.
  • You automatically unfollow each other.
  • If they try to see your profile, they will know that you’ve blocked them.
  • They will not be able DM you.

You can read all repercussions, here’s Twitter’s guide. But the biggest issue here is the DMs. The issue was recently brought to attention by a Twitter user.

Blocks can happen for many reasons. Maybe someone thought muting wasn’t strong enough, or maybe someone was being abusive, or maybe someone wants to fully protect their timeline from someone’s presence. Or probably you got into a Twitter fight — in public or in DMs. It any of this happens, it’s imperative to know that any DM history from before the blocking will be erased. Be safe: take screenshots and keep the evidence.
