Samsung's on-display pressure-sensitive fingerprint scanner almost ready: Reports
Samsung has reportedly registered patents for a pressure sensitive under-the-display fingerprint scanner.
Before Apple unveiled the iPhone X, rumours of the phone with a display embedded fingerprint scanner were adrift on the Internet. We believed that there would be a TouchID sensor under the display along with the FaceID scanner. However, that didn’t happen and Apple chose to forego the TouchID entirely. Samsung too had settled for the conventional yet oddly placed capacitive sensor on its 2017 flagships. However, it seems that the fingerprint sensor will make a comeback next year on a Samsung device.
If we are to believe a report from GalaxyClub, then Samsung could be debuting its new fingerprint scanner technology in one of its 2018 flagship smartphones. They have registered a patent in South Korea for a display embedded pressure-sensitive fingerprint scanner. The patents show that it could be placed somewhere at the bottom of the display, in a position nearby to the Galaxy S8’s virtual home button.
There had been rumours earlier this year that the Galaxy S8 could be debuting with a display embedded fingerprint scanner. However, Samsung was probably not happy with the technology even by the time the Galaxy Note 8 was launched. This led to the creation of weirdly placed fingerprint scanner on both the phones. Analysing the current situation, it seems that Samsung might be skipping the new technology on the Galaxy S9 and aim for the Note 9 launch.
The current Samsung flagships already boast of iris scanners and facial recognition systems. However, with the new fingerprint scanner technology, it will be another addition to the security layer on the upcoming Samsung flagship smartphones.
