Apple working on dedicated Apple Neural Engine' AI chip: report

Apple is aiming to take over Amazon and Alphabet in the artificial intelligence filed.

Apple is working on a processor dedicated specifically for empowering company’s artificial intelligence technology, reported Bloomberg Technology.

The new chip in works has internally been named Apple Neural Engine. It is being developed will help the Cupertino-based company to handle “AI-related tasks” that otherwise were performed by human intelligence, such as facial recognition and speech recognition.

A dedicated AI processor will help Apple to offload tasks that at present are handled by two different chips: the main processor and the graphic chip. It would also let the firm to enhance battery performance of their future products.

Apple is aiming to take over Amazon and Alphabet in the artificial intelligence filed, in which the two are continuously growing, while Apple has not really brought anything major in the filed since the introduction of its voice recognition software Siri in 2011.  

The information was shared by a person, who is familiar with the development, on the condition of anonymity as Apple has not yet made the product public. Apple is holding its annual developer’s conference in June this year and it is speculated the firm may discuss some of its latest developments in AI at the event.
