Apple could launch a cheaper iPhone with an iPhone 8 design.

Apple is preparing to launch the iPhone SE 2 in the near future and this information has been detailed by the world’s most reputed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. As per a research note, the iPhone SE 2 will launch in the first quarter of 2020 and it will be a budget-friendly option in comparison with the current iPhone 11 line-up. It will also boast some high-end specifications like an Apple A13 SoC, 3GB RAM and the fan-favourite design that’s found on the iPhone 8.

Kuo details that most of the iPhone SE 2’s hardware will be similar to the iPhone 8 and he estimates that the Cupertino-based brand will sell 30-40-million units across the next calendar year. This launch timeframe ties up previous reports which said that Apple could launch a cheaper iPhone with an iPhone 8 design and this indicates that it will feature a 4.7-inch LCD display and Touch ID for biometric authentication. Hence, Face ID will not make its way on to the lower-priced sibling.

Kuo hasn’t shared any details regarding the pricing of the iPhone SE 2 but before the original iPhone SE was discontinued, it came in with a starting price of USD 349.

A related report by 9to5Mac states, “Presumably, when the new SE launches, Apple will stop selling the iPhone 8 altogether. Given the current pricing of the 8, you could easily see how Apple could sell an iPhone SE 2 32 GB for around the same price as the old SE, in the USD 349-399 range. Kuo notes that the key target market for the new iPhone SE would be iPhone 6 owners. A spec-bumped iPhone 8 appeals to people who are not fussed about the latest iPhone features like Face ID or multi-camera modules, but do want a fast and speedy iPhone experience able to take advantage of the latest iOS features.”

Also, it is worth noting that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus aren’t eligible for the latest iOS 13 rollout and this may spur an “urgent replacement demand” for those who want to upgrade to the latest features. One example that’s pointed out is Apple Arcade and if Apple can pry away iPhone 6 owners from their current handset and manage to sell the iPhone SE 2 to them, then this would result in a surge of Apple Arcade subscriptions. The Apple A13 chipset would also help in enabling augmented reality experiences that older iPhones aren’t capable of running.

The iPhone 8-sized iPhone SE 2 would also appeal to owners who like the compact form factor as opposed to the larger-sized iPhone X lineup of handsets.
