The leaked renders of the iPhone 12 are a call-back to the iPhone 4.

In 2019, smartphones with 90Hz display are rapidly becoming a commonplace. Some specialist gaming handsets are already featuring 120Hz displays and now if the latest information is anything to go by, then Apple is preparing to not just catch up, but overtake the competition.

The latest bit of information regarding Apple’s upcoming smartphone comes from Digitimes who claim that the increasing number of fast refresh displays will be coming to the 2020 lineup of iPhone 12. Apple will most likely bring the ProMotion technology from the iPad Pro over to the next-generation iPhones.

A report from 9to5Mac states, “Apple first introduced 120Hz screens to iOS in 2017 with the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The refresh rate doubling dramatically improves the responsiveness of the user experience with user gestures more quickly being translated into on-screen motion. This means scrolling and swiping feels significantly more fluid. 120Hz also allows the screen to accurately depict 24 FPS, 48 FPS and 60 FPS video content.”

While the 120Hz display on the 2020 iPhone will certainly overtake the 90Hz display found on the OnePlus handsets and the Google Pixel 4; it won’t be the first in the market to this feature this fast speed. Razer’s Razer Phone was the first to come loaded with this feature and it was launched way back in 2017 with a 120Hz display that was synced to the graphics co-processor. However, it has to be stated that Razer used an LCD display and Digitimes is reporting  (which comes as no surprise) that Apple will be using an OLED display which is a similar one found on the iPhone 11 Pro.

If this report is anything to go by, then Apple will take the lead in display technology; however, these iPhones with the 120Hz display won’t arrive until September 2020 which is a good 10 months from now. Between now and then, there will be countless smartphone launches from the likes of Samsung, Huawei, OnePlus and Xiaomi among others. With 90Hz screens now becoming the norm, the jump to 120Hz is the next logical step and we see many smartphone manufacturing vying for the top spot with this feature thrown in.
