Android O will seal OnePlus 3/3T's update cycle
The company has announced Android O to be last major update for the OP 3/3T and the assignment of OnePlus 5 to the Open Beta Program.
A few months ago, OnePlus was criticised for quietly withdrawing support for the OnePlus 2 smartphone, despite promising the Nougat update. OnePlus has, therefore, announced the update cycle for their last year’s flagship duo — the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T on their blog and it seems to be a good one for the users of these smartphones.
Both the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T will be updated to Android O, post which no new OS updates will roll out for the two smartphones. However, the smartphones will continue to get security support for a foreseeable future. The smartphones will be eventually phased out globally in the upcoming days. However, India will still get to enjoy the OnePlus 3T.
“Android O is going to be the last Android version update we’ll release for OP3/3T. We’ll continue to release security patch updates for the foreseeable future, and offer support for individual application updates. After the OP3/3T have been updated to Android O, we’ll start moving the Open Beta Program from OP3/3T to OP5,” said OliverZ, head of Product, OnePlus.
It is surprising the support for these two smartphones will be withdrawn so early in their lifecycle. The OnePlus 3T is only less than a year old and yet it faces the axe from the Chinese smartphone manufacturer. It seems that the company is following Google’s model of two-major-software-updates-per-device. This seems to be surprising as Apple manages to provide the latest OS updates to the iPhone 5S, a smartphone that was launched in 2013.
