Netflix now streaming HDR on these new smartphones

Netflix is one of the few video streaming services that can stream HDR content to supported devices. Usually, most of the flagship phones from most of the established brands launched in 2017 and 2018 support HDR format content. However, Netflix also has to roll out support for HDR content playback for the supported smartphones and tablets. The good news is that if you consume Netflix religiously on your latest flagship smartphone, then chances are that your device could have just been one of the few to support HDR.

Netflix’s updated app now supports three smartphones for its HDR services — the Huawei P20 Pro, Huawei Mate 10 Pro and the Sony Xperia XZ2. Users will need to update their Netflix app to version 5.0 from the Google PlayStore. Once updated, you should be able to make out the improvement from the non-HDR content.

With the addition of these smartphones, Netflix now supports a total of 10 devices for HDR playback:

• Huawei Mate 10 Pro
• Huawei P20
• LG V30
• Razer Phone
• Samsung Galaxy Note 8
• Samsung Galaxy Tab S3
• Samsung Galaxy S9
• Sony Xperia XZ Premium
• Sony Xperia XZ1
• Sony Xperia XZ2

However, the support for Dolby Vision content playback is only limited to the 2017’s LG G6. If you don’t posses much information about HDR and Dolby Vision, then here’s a brief rundown of the same — standard HDR or HDR 10 an open source format of HDR picture format that is embraced by most manufacturers looking to jump on the HDR bandwagon without paying licensing fees. Dolby Vision requires dedicated hardware inside devices and is claimed to be superior to HDR 10, with brightness levels going up to 10,000 nits instead of HDR 10’s 1,000 nits. One device that supports Dolby Vision but is excluded form the list is the iPhone X.
