Recently, Apple announced their latest A12 Bionic chip in their new iPhones for 2018. The A12 has a hexa-core CPU paired with an octa-core neural processor and a quad-core GPU. Apple promised higher performance improvements compared to the predecessor, promising even higher benchmark scores than rival chips from Qualcomm or any other manufacturers. However, the A12 loses out on one department to the SD 845-powered Android flagships in one key area — graphics.

The iPhone XS and XS Max were recently put under tests on popular benchmarks to see how much of an improvement is it over the last generation chips from Apple and Qualcomm. As claimed, the A12 chip was found devastating any other flagship from the Android universe in terms of raw performance. On GeekBench 4, the iPhone XS and XS Max scored an average of 11,500, which is considerably higher than the OnePlus 6’s score of 9,088. On GFXBench 5.0/Metal, the A12-powered iPhones were rendering the ‘Aztec Ruins’ and ‘Car Chase’ scenes at a much higher frame rate of at least 1,774.1 frames and 1,674.3 frames respectively. The new iPhones also blazed through 4K video rendering test faster than anything else on the market.

However, in the 3DMark Slingshot Extreme, the OnePlus 6 easily snatched a score of 5,124, which is considerably higher than the iPhone XS Max’s 4,339. Even Samsung’s Galaxy S9+scored higher in the graphics department than the new iPhones. The 3DMark Slingshot Extreme evaluates rendering to volumetric lighting in the most hardcore ways. The A12 chip’s quad-core GPU could have led to the lower scores, especially when compared to the 18-core GPU on Samsung’s S9 and Note 9.

However, Apple’s optimises its operating system very effectively when compared to the phones that beat it in the graphics test. Therefore, in the real world, iOS 12 on the iPhone XS and XS Max will eventually perform better as compared to the latest Android Pie on the OnePlus 6 or the Galaxy Note 9.
