The reason for the iPhones being so expensive in India is due to its import tariffs. To deal with this Apple has started manufacturing iPhone SE in India at a facility in Bengaluru, where an Apple's Taiwan-based contract manufacturer is making them since May 2017.

However, a new report suggests that Apple has already started manufacturing new iPhone 6s in India as well. Report from Economic Times has stated Apple had started manufacturing iPhone 6s at the same Wistron facility in Bengaluru. The report also states that Apple had chosen the iPhone 6s production due to its sales potential in the Indian market.

What this means is that there wouldn't be any more import duties on the iPhone 6s unlike now and henceforth consumers can get iPhone 6s at a cheaper price. This will also help Apple to extend its share in the mid-range premium segment as well.

According to the executives from Apple in the report, they stated “The made-in-India iPhone 6s will be only sold in India like iPhone SE since it will take time to scale up capacity. In fact, Apple will continue with the import of iPhone 6s until capacity improves. Hence, there will be no price correction for the locally manufactured units. The made-in-India iPhone 6s model will hit the stores soon.”

A report from Counterpoint states that iPhone 6 series contributes almost a third of total sales of iPhones in India as compared to less than 15 per cent generated from iPhone SE.

This new attempt from Apple explains the company's idea to expand its local manufacturing units to keep its prices stable and competitive since the government has imposed a 10 per cent import tariffs on printed circuit boards populated with memory and chips, camera modules and connectors.
