Apple is expected to feature Ultra-Wide Band support that will help with better indoor navigation.

The 2019 Apple iPhones are expected to launch in September and with it, we may see three new handsets, just like the company did last year with the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. As of now, the branding hasn’t yet been revealed so for the sake of this article, we will be referring to them as the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max and iPhone 11R.

Here is a breakdown of some of the features expected to arrive with the iPhone 11.

New Design

The iPhone 11 line-up will borrow a lot of design trends from the iPhone XS and the iPhone X before it; however, there will definitely be some noticeable changes that separate it from previous generations. Apple will be adding a square camera hump that will feature a triple-lens camera setup on the iPhone 11 and 11 Max while the iPhone 11R also gets a square camera bump although it will have just two rear sensors. Apple will also be using a new type of glass on the rear that will be different from the ones used on the iPhone XS and XS Max.

Apple will also be making use of a redesigned mute switch, and switch up a feature that has been around since the first iPhone. Apart from this, Apple is expected to feature a frosted glass rear and the device could be half a millimetre thicker. The iPhone 11R could also come in two new colours — lavender and green which will replace the blue and coral iPhone XR.

Improved Cameras

With every new iPhone, Apple does a lot of work on its cameras. However, this time around, the changes are not just under the hood but noticeable as well. The stand-out features of the iPhone 11 series will include a triple-lens camera setup on the iPhone 11 and 11 Max while the iPhone 11R will come with dual rear camera setup.

As per a report by iDropNews, “As far as what benefits that might have for consumers, there are quite a few. Depending on Apple’s implementation, a triple-lens setup could allow for better zoom, wide-angle shots and improved low-light performance. A Smart-Frame feature will capture more of the image outside of the standard frame, which can be used later during editing and cropping. The excess frame will be discarded automatically after a period of time.”

The dual-lens system on the iPhone 11R could feature an optical zoom and its front-facing camera will be able to record slow-motion video at 120fps.

All-new Taptic Engine

It is unfortunate but Apple will finally be ditching the 3D Touch, a feature that has been a staple on iPhones since the iPhone 6S. However, in its place, Apple will introduce a revamped Taptic Engine which is known internally as ‘leap haptics.’ Apart from its codename, nothing much else is known about this new overhauled Taptic Engine.

However, if we have to guess then it could be something similar to what Apple used last year with the iPhone XR and at the time they dubbed it as Haptic Touch. We feel that this will be the same implementation used on the upcoming iPhones and will use long presses to mimic 3D Touch. Apple has even dropped support for 3D Touch in iOS 13 so there is mounting evidence that Apple will ditch this feature with the iPhone 11 line-up.

Bilateral Wireless Charging

With the 2017 iPhones, Apple introduced Qi-enabled wireless charging and this year, they are expected to improve on it. As per reports, Apple will be adding two-way wireless charging or bilateral wireless charging on its 2019 iPhones.

With this feature, you will be able to charge other devices that support Qi-wireless charging such as another compatible iPhone or the newly launched Apple AirPods by just placing them on the rear of the iPhones. This is not a huge feature but it is a welcome one nonetheless especially since Samsung and Huawei already make use of it.

Apple A13 Bionic chipset

As with every new iteration, Apple adds a new processor in the iPhones. This year is the year of the Apple A13 Bionic and it will come with class-leading specifications as you can expect only from Apple. With it you can expect a substantial boost in performance and couple with the available RAM, the iPhone 11 will be a powerhouse of a device.

Other improvements under the hood include a battery bump in comparison to the current iPhone XS and XS Max. As of now, details of the battery aren’t yet available but you can expect to get a major upgrade.

Indoor Navigation

With the iPhone 11 series, Apple is expected to upgrade its wireless connectivity across the board. It is expected to come with Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) support that could aid in better navigation and positioning features while using the handsets indoors.
