Girl wants dad's name out of docus

The SC inquired if an individual's maternal name could be used on documents in cases where the father is absent.

Islamabad: Pakistan’s Supreme Court is considering to allow a girl remove her father’s name from the documents. An18-year-old Pakistani girl has filed a petition in Supreme Court to remove her father’s name from birth certificate and other official documents.

In the petition filed, the girl prays, “If parents can disown children, why can’t children do so?”

A bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Ijazul Ahsan is hearing the unique case filed by Tatheer Fatima.

The girl went on to say, “How a person who she had never seen can be called her father?”

The court has sought support of the National Database and Registration Authority to help trace girl’s father and adjourned the hearing. The SC inquired if an individual’s maternal name could be used on documents in cases where the father is absent.
