Moscow: Russia on Saturday welcomed US President Donald Trump's proposal to reduce nuclear capabilities, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

"Some initiatives in terms of reducing nuclear potential are welcome, but in this case, it is very difficult to (react to) common phrases. The intentions are good, but we would like to know the details, (in particular) what President Trump means (by his proposals)," Sputnik quoted Peskov as saying.

He highlighted that US experts have not discussed the idea with their Russian colleagues.

Trump had previously said that Russia, China and the United States should invest in long-term peace rather than spending on weapons.

This comes as both the United States and Russia suspended their obligations under the Cold War-era Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, giving rise to fears of a new arms race.

While Washington has blamed Moscow of violating the treaty, Kremlin has time and again denied the charges.

Russia also called for the renewal of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) which limits the number of nuclear warheads the superpowers can deploy. The deal is set to expire in 2021, but can be extended for another five years depending on the signatories.
