Benegal’s CBFC reforms to be discussed in the Parliament

Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal’s committee for censorship reforms has proposed scrapping all censor cuts, and implementing four categories of uncut certification.

Veteran filmmaker Shyam Benegal’s committee for censorship reforms has proposed scrapping all censor cuts, and implementing four categories of uncut certification. One of the suggested categories include ‘Adult With Caution’ which would be awarded to cinema that should be viewed with care by adults too.

However, Pahlaj Nihalani, chairperson of the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has said that neither has he received a copy of suggested reforms, nor is the censor board liable to implement the changes suggested by Benegal.

“The suggestions of Mr Benegal’s committee will now be discussed in the winter session of the parliament. In fact, they have already been tabled for discussion in the winter session. Only when the Parliament approves and passes the recommendations would the CBFC be asked to implement them. At the moment, we at the CBFC are not obliged to consider Mr Benegal’s suggestions, wise as they may be,” said Pahlaj.
