It’s not a sex comedy: Ali Fazal

Little did Kishore Kumar know in 1978, when he first sang Pyaar Manga Hai Tumhi Se, that the song would get a steamy twist in 2016. The song that stars Ali Fazal and Zarine Khan hit the airwaves last week and the explicit kisses and lovemaking scenes the couple share in the video, is already the talk of the town.

Ali, who plays the male lead in the video defends its content, saying, “It’s not vulgar at least. It’s not like the sex comedies, which turn intimacy into a joke. They need cupping and sleazy punch lines to eroticise it, and somehow make people imagine lovemaking in twisted ways.”

He goes on to explain that it’s the story of any new couple these days. “This song is a day in the life of a newly married couple, who indulge in PDA. Many couples do this these days. Why do we shy away from accepting it Just take a stroll down to Bandstand and see for yourself.”

The Fukrey actor says it’s not against Indian values to indulge in PDA. “I am not aping the West here. And there is nothing suggestive about the song. It’s all upfront and matter of fact. Yes, the story line in the video misses out on acting. I’ll be honest. It’s a road we took.”

Ali, however, says he’s not one who gets steamy in public. “In my personal life, I’m totally opposite, but I don’t want people to cringe when they see our video. Anything we do with some erotic content is scrutinised to death.” As an afterthought, Ali adds, “Actually, we haven’t even taken our clothes off till the last few seconds of the song, and then we make love like any normal couple.”
