Last seen in Akira, Sonakshi Sinha feels that the society needs gender equality and that very soon, things will change for the better. This is what came through loud and clear when she spoke at the launch of #LikeAGirl campaign in Mumbai on Tuesday.

“Not only in Bollywood but gender bias exists in every field. Be it journalism, business or sports, it exists. Never let a girl feel like she is lesser than anyone. So that when she grows up, she doesn’t have to struggle with gender bias. I think, in today’s day and age, gender equality is of utmost importance because women are in a position to bring about change. They are raising their voice, coming forward and are progressing in their respective fields.”

“As the awareness spreads, the change will come gradually. We are far away from being at equal level but we are trying and we will keep trying,” she said, adding, “When people said discouraging things to me, I chose to ignore it and that is why I am where I am today.”

Sonakshi also praised her family for their support. “I’m lucky to have a family that always supported me. I am sure Sakshi’s (Sakshi Malik’s) parents supported her immensely and which is why she is where she is today, and why she was able to bring back the medal from the Olympics. I feel we also need a very strong support system — not only families, but also friends, relatives and anybody who is around you in that circle. Being supportive is really important, especially when girls are growing up,” Sonakshi concluded.
