I try to trust my instincts and go with the flow, says Nikita Singh
Born in Patna and raised in Indore, 23-year-old author Nikita Singh has written eight bestsellers in four years. Like a love song, After all this time and The promise are a few of her well known works. The author has recently come up with her new novel Every time it rains, which narrates the story of Laila, who is trying to overcome her painful past.
She spent a few years working as an editor with a publishing house in the national capital before moving to New York for her MFA in creative writing at The New School. Nikita, who currently lives in Manhattan and dabbles as a fashion stylist, talks to us about her inspiration, favourite genre and how she fights writer’s block.
Does inspiration strike you at the oddest of hours and places?
When I’m actively thinking about what my next book is going be — a lot of ideas come at odd moments, but only a few stick. Then I start building on those ideas, add layers and develop it into a novel.
Which genre draws you the most as a reader and a writer?
I read and write whatever I feel like in the moment. I especially enjoy writing about relationships and exploring different human emotions.
One fictional character close to your heart and why?
Suri from the film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is one of my favourite fictional characters. The character was honest, generous and very real. I think Shah Rukh Khan portrayed the role with all heart.
Your antidote to writer’s block?
According to me writer’s block happens only when we overthink things and I make sure not to do that. I try to trust my instincts, go with the flow and see the book through to the end.
A book you keep revisiting ?
I am a big fan of the Harry Potter series and ensure that read it once every year. Similarly, I love watching Star Wars series too.
