Mercedes-Benz introduces AMG G 63 Edition 463' and AMG GLS 63 in India
Who doesn't like big SUVs, especially one with a Mercedes badge? Well, Mercedes-Benz India has launched not just one but two performance SUVs in the country, the Mercedes-AMG G 63 ‘Edition 463’ and the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 in India. Now Mercedes has a total of eight SUVs on offer in India. While the G 63 ‘Edition 463’ is priced at Rs 2.17 crores, the GLS 63 is priced at Rs 1.58 crores (ex-showroom Pune). Since both of these SUVs have been launched under the Mercedes-Benz ‘designo’ platform, you can customise your SUV and the prices will vary according to the options added.
Starting with the iconic G, the ‘Edition 463’ adds 28PS to the already bonkers Mercedes-AMG G 63. It packs a supercharged 5.5-litre V8 engine which churns out 571PS of max power at 5500rpm and a mountain moving 760Nm torque at 5000rpm. Mated to an AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-TRONIC gearbox, the 3 tonne SUV rockets from a standstill to 100kmph in 5.4 seconds and gets an electronically-limited top speed of 210kmph.
Outside, the hand-built SUV gets massive 21-inch, 5-split spoke alloy wheels in matte black, stainless-steel underride guard, AMG Sport stripes on its flanks and dark aluminium-finish inserts in the exterior protective strips. Inside, the SUV is dipped in luxury with a single-tone dashboard in black designo leather, two-tone seats finished in designo black leather or designo light brown leather with black carbon leather side bolsters. The two-tone black ‘designo’ leather single-tone dashboard, ‘designo’ black leather or ‘designo’ light brown leather 2-tone seats with black carbon leather side bolsters. The two-tone effect continues to the centre console as well. The dashboard, front and rear door handles, armrest, handbrake, seat covers and head restraints front and rear are colour-coordinated to the seats.
Moving on to the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63, this mammoth SUV too is powered by a 5.5-litre V8 Biturbo engine producing 585PS of power and 760Nm of torque. To stabilise the weight, it gets AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension with ACTIVE CURVE SYSTEM roll stabilisation. The engine sends its power to all the four wheels via the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system with a rear-biased split of 40:60 between the front and rear axle. Mated to the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-TRONIC transmission, the GLS 63 is capable of launching off the line and reaching triple digit speeds in just 4.6 seconds.
From the outside, it's very easy to differentiate between the standard GLS and the 63 AMG. The AMG Bodystyling pack with the huge air dams in the front bumper, black alloy wheels with red brake callipers, black inserts on the bumpers and outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs) make it stand out. Inside, the sense of luxury is heightened by an AMG performance steering wheel draped in black Nappa leather, multicolour front seats including massage function, luxury head restraints and seat cushion depth adjustment, heated front and rear seats, double sunblind, Harmon Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system and electrically-foldable second and third-row seats.
In India, these SUVs will lock horns with the likes of the Range Rover Sport SVR, BMW X5M and the X6M.
