Tata Motors has announced that it will introduce of a customisation application once the Harrier SUV goes on sale. The ‘do it yourself’ or DIY strategy will allow buyers to configure powertrain, seating configuration, suspension tuning and brakes for their new SUV, which is likely to launch in the first half of next year.

Based on the Omega platform, Tata believes the modular architecture will empower customers to personalise their vehicles beyond colour, upholstery, interiors and features. The configuration app, the carmaker says, took more than a year-and-a-half to develop and will be part of Tata’s eGuru app suite. After the customer selects his/her options, the data will be sent to the manufacturer’s supply chain to churn out the specifics. The carmaker says that the tool will significantly reduce the time-to-market of its vehicles and improve operational efficiency, while saving costs.

Currently, its sub-4 metre compact SUV, the Nexon, is offered with customisation options that are limited to the choice of colours and accessories. Tata also said that the DIY method will be implemented in its truck business to cater to the various needs of the industry. Expect other cars based on the Omega and Alpha platforms, like the 45X hatchback and the EVision electric sedan, to be offered with similar customisation options too.

We expect Tata to roll out the app soon. As soon as that happens, we will bring you our take on the user experience of the app and also review the various options that the carmaker will offer with its upcoming SUV. Till then, stay tuned to ZigWheels.
