Volvo to unveil first EV XC40 SUV in October

PUNE: Volvo Cars, the Swedish luxury car brand, will unveil its first fully electric car called XC40 small SUV next month for the global market in the US.

The brand has promised that its first EV will be “one of the safest cars we’ve ever built”. India launch and its assembly in the country is also on the cards. It will unveil the electric version of the SUV on October 16 in America.

The company, famed for its safety, said that it aims to maintain its established reputation for safety with the new model.

“Regardless of what drives a car forward, be it an electric machine or combustion engine, a Volvo must be safe,” Malin Ekholm, Head of Safety at Volvo Cars said. The front structure of the XC40, which is built on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform, has been redesigned to account for the absence of an engine.

The XC40 SUV, with the starting price at Rs 39.9 lakh, is currently on sale in India. The demand for Volvo cars has been growing steadily in the country. Its sales grew 11 per cent to 1,159 units in January-June period while mass car market continued to bleed.
