Telangana prisons make good business

The turnover that was marked to Rs 216 crore in 2015 has now risen to Rs 309 crore in this year.

Hyderabad: Industries run by the Telangana Prisons’ department are rocking with the growth rate and turnover that has crossed Rs 300 crore landmark in 2016.

The turnover that was marked to Rs 216 crore in 2015 has now risen to Rs 309 crore in this year. While the turnover increased by nearly Rs 100 crore, the profits have nearly risen to Rs 6 crore in the current year against Rs 4.77 crore in 2015 and Rs 3.75 crore in 2014.

Prisons DG Vinoy Kumar Singh said that the department would introduce as many as 75 more prisons-run petrol bunks in the state in 2017.

Presently, the department is running seven petrol bunks in Cherlapalli, Chanchal-guda, Nalgonda, Kham-mam, Mahbubnagar, Nizamabad and Uppal localities. “We are planning few more petrol bunks in Asifabad, Chanchalguda near the women’s prison and at Cherlapally central prison. We begin works this week,” prisons’ DIG Akula Narasimha said.

Mr Narasimha said that the turnover of the prisons industries has crossed Rs 50 crore and more than Rs 250 crore towards petrol bunks. “By the end of 2017, we shall set up 75 more petrol bunks. ,” he said.

Besides the industries, the Telangana prisons adopted technology in 2016 including e-mulakhat and Prison Management Information System. “The PMIS enables slot booking over the prisons’ website for mulakhats by the families of prisoners apart from keeping a complete history of each prisoner,” V.K. Singh said.
