Nifty extends losses, mid-caps outperform

NSE 50-share Nifty index opened slightly lower at 9,648.10 and fell further to 9,608.60 before finishing at 9,633.60.

Mumbai: Benchmark Nifty ended marginally lower for the second session today at 9,633.60 on profit booking in metal, auto, IT, energy and pharma stocks amid weakness in global peers.

In overseas markets, European stocks edged lower as oil and gas, financial and tech shares struggled.

Asian shares ended mixed following a sell off in energy shares after oil prices slipped around 2 per cent overnight.

US stocks declined overnight as investors dumped energy shares after crude oil prices sank into bear-market territory amid growing concerns that an uptick in global production would derail Opec's efforts to reduce supply.

The NSE 50-share Nifty index opened slightly lower at 9,648.10 and fell further to 9,608.60 before finishing at 9,633.60, a modest fall of 19.90 points, or 0.21 per cent.

It saw an intra-day movement of about 41.85 points.

Sector-wise, Metal fell 1.18 per cent, IT 0.65 per cent, Auto 0.60 per cent, Energy 0.30 per cent and Pharma 0.26 per cent.

However, FMCG rose 0.77 per cent, Realty 0.55 per cent and PSU Bank 0.32 per cent.

Positive breadth was observed in broader markets as the Nifty mid-cap and small-cap indices gained 0.17 per cent and 0.12 per cent, respectively.

Major index gainers were HUL (2.78 per cent), Kotak Mahindra Bank (0.91 per cent), Maruti (0.85 per cent), Sun Pharma (0.80 per cent), HDFC Bank (0.72 per cent) and Wipro (0.69 per cent).

Losers included Hindalco (2.70 per cent), ONGC (2.54 per cent), Tata Motors (2.16 per cent), Bosch Ltd (1.98 per cent), GAIL (1.85 per cent) and Lupin (1.69 per cent).

A total of 847 scrips declined, 832 advanced, while 80 remained unchanged.

Total securities that hit their price bands were 120.

Turnover in the cash segment fell to Rs 21,632.98 crore from Rs 22,111.75 crore yesterday.

A total of 11,855.58 lakh shares changed hands in 86,73,971 trades.

The market capitalisation of listed firms on the NSE stood at Rs 1,25,73,130.08 crore.
