Chennai techie murder: After operation on throat, suspect can’t talk for 2 days

The Swathi murder suspect, who slit his throat when the police nabbed him at his residence near Shengottai in Tirunelveli district, would be unable to talk for two days, according to Dr Sithy Athiya Munavarah, dean of Tirunelveli medical college hospital (TVMCH), where a surgery was performed on the suspect.

Ramkumar, 22 — son of Paramasivam of Meenakshipuam, near Shengottai — sensing the arrival of the police to arrest him, was reported to have attempted to suicide by slitting his throat using a blade on late on Friday night.

However, he was caught by the Shengottai police, who immediately rushed him to a private hospital and later to Tenkasi government hospital, where he was given first aid. Later, at around 1.40 am on Saturday, Ramkumar was bought to Tirunelveli medical college hospital, where he underwent a surgery by a team of doctors headed by ENT specialist, Dr Suresh Kumar.

After the operation, which went on for about 40 minutes, Ramkumar was kept at the post-operative care unit. He was shifted to intensive surgical care unit on later on Saturday morning.

According to the TVMCH dean, the injury, a 7 cm long cut with a depth of 3 cm on the neck, has not damaged any of his nerves. Doctors further added that any patient, after such an operation, would be kept under observation for seven days. With regard to Ramkumar, the dean said, “taking into consideration his health condition, he should not strain his throat by speaking.”

A senior police officer, said that they did not officially record his arrest till Saturday evening.
