In a bid to stop people from throwing litter in public, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation has appointed special metropolitan magistrates to prosecute violators of anti-litter law.

The NDMC has appointed 12 special metropolitan magistrates for six municipal zones under its jurisdiction. The civic body is confident strict prosecution of the violators will help in achieving Prime Minister Narendra Modi’ ambitious Swachchh Bharat Mission.

According to a senior NDMC officer, people can also lodge complaints against anyone found throwing garbage in open or in public places with these special metropolitan magistrates, as per their jurisdiction.

Another senior officer said these special magistrates have also been empowered to receive complaints directly from public to make the Swachchh Bharat Mission successful by prosecuting violators. “Earlier, they only used to prosecute violators based on a notice issued by the civic staff, but now they will also act on complaints received from people,” said the NDMC officer.

The NDMC urged people living under its jurisdiction to lodge their complaints with these special magistrates. “We appeal to public at large to lodge complaints with special metropolitan magistrates,” said NDMC director Yogendra Singh Mann.
