200 CCTVs for badly-lit areas of North Campus
Senior police officers of the city’s north district have sent a letter to the police headquarters to install 200 CCTV cameras around ill-lit areas without surveillance cameras in and around the Delhi University’s North Cam-pus where a huge number of varsity students live as paying guests.
SHOs of Roop Nagar, Timarpur and Maurice Nagar in North Delhi were ordered to conduct extensive surveys to pinpoint dark stretches on the campus. The police officers of the north district convened a meeting on the issue with local legislators three days ago and discussed safety and security of students on the North Campus of the Delhi University. After the meeting, a letter was sent to the police headquarters about the decision to install 200 CCTV cameras in the dark stretches identified around the North campus area by the police.
“Based on the surveys conducted in their jurisdiction, the SHOs of Roop Nagar, Timarpur and Maurice Nagar marked the stretches that were ill-lit and revealed the details in a letter handed over to the senior police officers of the northern range,” said a senior police officer.
“Students feel safe and beat patrolling by our force is conducted all the time... These cameras will be installed at crucial poi-nts like University Road, Patel Chest Hospital area, Mall Road and other such places. The decision to install 200 CCTV cameras was taken two days ago in a meeting held by senior police officers and the local politicians,” said Madhur Verma, DCP (North).
Civic agencies, such as public works department and municipal corporations, have also been informed about the non-functional streetlights in the areas listed in the letter, the police officer said.
