3 youth held over road rage attack
Acting swiftly in a case of road rage, the Northwest district police arrested three youth who allegedly opened fire at a 24-year-old man on northwest Delhi’s Azadpur flyover on Friday.
The arrested persons were identified as Salman Khan (20), Tejveer (19) and Rohan (18), all residents of Mukundpur area in northwest Delhi. The police has also recovered a single-barrel country-made gun and a scooter from their possession.
The accused allegedly shot Ravi Kant Jha, an accountant’s assistant at a private firm in south Delhi’s Bhikaji Cama Place, after the latter reprimanded them for rash driving.
According to the police, the incident took place at around 9 pm on March 1. A PCR call was received regarding a “gunshot incident” at Kewal Park, near Azadpur flyover, under Adarsh Nagar police station. When a police team reached the spot, it found that the victim, Ravi Kant Jha, was injured. He was shot in the shoulder. He was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.
In his statement to the police, the victim said he works as an accounts assistant with a private firm in Bhikaji Cama Place. The incident took place when Mr Jha, along with his friend Rohit, was coming from Shalimar Bagh Road towards Road No. 51 in his i10 car. When they reached Azadpur Chowk red light, three persons riding a grey scooter suddenly stopped in front of their car. When Mr Jha asked the scooter driver to be careful, the trio on the scooter got infuriated, which led to a scuffle between the victim and the trio. Soon afterwards, one of the youth took out a gun from the trunk of the scooter and fired at Mr Jha, hitting him in the shoulder. Mr Jha fell to the ground and the trio fled.
“The police had no leads about the attackers. A police team was formed and local intelligence channels were activated,” said a senior police official. Acting on a tip-off from an informer, all of the accused were caught during vehicle checking at MCD Colony near Road No. 51. On sustained interrogation, the accused confessed to their involvement.
“The accused have been booked under the IPC section of attempt to murder. Salman, who opened fired at the victim, procured the weapon from Aligarh district in UP,” said deputy commissioner of police (northwest) Vijay Singh.
