AIIMS will ink deal to expand trauma centre
To decongest and expand its tertiary care medical services being provided to all sections of society, including a large number of poor patients, AIIMS will be signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) for expansion of its Trauma Centre.
After completion of the proposed expansion plan at an estimated cost of Rs 3,000 crore, about 2,250 more beds will be available for patients.
According to a well-placed source at AIIMS, the MoU between AIIMS and NBCC will be signed on December 21 for the expansion of Jai Prakash Narayan Apex Trauma Centre Phase II. Expansion will done on the 15-acre land available with AIIMS in four years. “An MoU will signed between director, AIIMS, Prof. M.C. Mishra, and chairman and MD, NBCC, Dr A.K. Mittal,” he said.
Sources told this newspaper that it would possible to add 2,250 indoor hospital beds in disciplines not yet fully developed by AIIMS. Around one-third of these indoor beds would be marked for critical care. “Additional beds will cut the long waiting period at the institute and also provide additional beds for critical care,” he added.
As per the plan, the proposed expansion will have a centre for digestive diseases, national centre for otolaryngology and head and neck surgery, spine treatment block, trauma expansion and rehabilitation block, centre for endocrine diabetes and metabolic disorder, organ transplant block and general facility cluster block and two hostel blocks. There would be over 50 ultra-modern operation theatres and laboratories for research.
Dedicated research facilities for regenerative medicine, nano medicine, biomedical engineering, drug development and a bio-safety level-4 (BSL) laboratory will be set up after completion of the proposed expansion.
For the required services, a waste recycling centre, collection and segregation of waste and recycling of STP waste will be also made available. “Construction will be done on green building concepts with a target to achieve a minimum of four-star rating,” he said.
