Arvind Kejriwal will meet L-G today over Delhi security
In a serious bid to improve overall security in the national capital, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to hold serious deliberations with lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung on Wednesday. The key issues which are likely to be discussed during the meeting are better utilisation of CCTV camera feed, coordination between the police and civil defence volunteers, lighting of dark spots, steps required to enhance women safety and proper coordination amongst the government, legislators and the police.
The AAP government has been taking several measures to strengthen the safety and security of Delhiites.
In its proposed budget, the government had allocated Rs 1,068 crore for women safety, security and empowerment for the next fiscal.
City finance minister Manish Sisodia had said that the government had already installed 200 CCTV cameras in DTC buses. He said that the government has made it mandatory for all public transport vehicles, including taxis, to install GPS system for tracking vehicles.
For security of people on roads, in residential areas and overall security in the city, the government had proposed a new scheme of installation CCTV cameras and surveillance system throughout the national capital. An initial budgetary allocation of Rs 200 crore under this scheme has also been proposed in the budget.
Mr Sisodia said a total of 42,000 dark spots have been identified on 421 stretches of roads after sharing of information among multiple agencies, including the police and NGOs. He said adequate arrangements of lighting on these stretches will be completed in the next fiscal and a provision of Rs 214 crore has been made for providing lighting on the identified dark spots.
For providing women safety, Mohalla Rakshah Dal of Civil Defence Volunteers has been set up as a pilot project in the Karawal Nagar Assembly constituency. The government has proposed to set up Rakshah Dals in all the Assembly seats in the next fiscal with a plan outlay of '200 crore. Even newly appointed police commissioner Alok Kumar Verma had recently instructed his deputy commissioners to seek regular feed-back from their local MLAs and address their grievances on a priority.
