The tall claim of the Delhi police of providing assistance within few minutes fell flat when a journalist called the police to intervene and thus avert a possible road rage incident at Mayur Vihar area on Monday morning. He got a response from the police after two hours and 11 minutes later. However, till then he had somehow managed to pacify the mob which had blocked the way of the school cab that was carrying schoolkids. He then left for his work.

The incident comes in the wake of the inadequacy of the police to respond quickly in such cases due to shortage of manpower.

Avdesh Chaudhary, who is a journalist in a digital news portal of a TV channel, was on his way to board the Metro at Mayur Vihar Phase-I Metro station on Monday morning. Suddenly, he noticed a huge jam. He saw some people had blocked the passage of a school cab that was carrying schoolkids. They were shouting, creating nuances. Mr Chaudhary enquired the matter and learnt that there was a heated argument going on between the school cab driver and the mob. Even the children who were inside the cab stepped out owing to fear.

Mr Chaudhary decided to intervene into the matter and immediately informed the police. “I called the police at around 11.46 am and received a message — “Delhi police will be reaching you shortly” — at 11.56 am. “But I was there till 12.15 pm and no policemen came there to stop the on-going argument between these people. After seeing the poor response of the police, I decided to sort out the matter and pacify the mob and the driver as I didn’t want the children to suffer. Some passerby also came forward to sort out the matter. Later, the cab driver paid some money and the matter was sorted out.”

“After 2 hours and 11 minutes I got a response from Delhi police,” said Mr Chaudhry. He even shared this incident on social media.

Meanwhile, a police official said that due to shortage of manpower, the police could not respond to this matter on time.
